Ellie Armstrong knows the power of a supportive environment. As Sports Centre Manager for East Lancashire Learning Group, overseeing facilities at both the Accrington and Rossendale and Nelson and Colne College sites while co-running another business, EG-PT Personal Training, she presents a figure of professional confidence.
Just a few years ago, however, Ellie, from Accrington, was a quiet teenager who preferred to stay in the background.
We spoke with Ellie to hear how combining the right education with practical industry experience transformed her career.

Lancashire Adult Learning has been graded by Ofsted as outstanding once again, following its latest inspection. The grading of outstanding is the highest possible achievement and means Lancashire Adult Learning provides exceptional education which goes above and beyond.
The result comes on top of Lancashire Adult Learning, part of East Lancashire Learning Group, being the number one college in the country for adult learning. Lisa O’Loughlin, Principal and CEO at ELLG, said: “I am so proud of this achievement and that the inspectors witnessed what I see every day, that we are an amazing college group which is 100% per cent focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for our learners.”
Lancashire Adult Learning has won the ‘Healthier Futures’ Award at the Get the Nation Learning Awards for its success in improving the health of Lancashire residents through bespoke learning provision. Through partnerships with Public Health, Primary Care Networks and Social Prescribers, Lancashire Adult Learning has engaged over 10,000 learners in 300 community venues.
The Get the Nation Learning Awards panel chose LAL as its winner for its extensive outreach and dedication to addressing local and national health priorities through its curriculum. The success of Lancashire Adult Learning is clear: 95% of learners on health and wellbeing courses said the courses helped them stay physically and mentally well, and 98% felt their confidence, resilience and motivation had improved. Many learners use the courses as a springboard into further learning.
